The verbal eraser ...

As we all know John was a keen "discusser" - he knew the difference between an argument and a discussion - he was more interested in enlightenment (of others or himself, or both) than winning (although he did enjoy that too!). I quickly learned that he was genuinely engaged, not just passing time.  His seemingly endless curiosity about any topic was almost exhausting at times during our Thursday morning chats. To give myself breathing room, I noticed that, like many of us, he used the word "but" in response to a point - I seized my chance to slow him down by introducing him to the term, "Verbal eraser" to describe the word "but" - I encouraged us to use "and", "or" etc. From then on he loved to catch me out if I used "but" - his eyes would twinkle and that smile would appear - "Gotcha!"
