Who Can Apply For The CPP Death Benefit?
If there is an estate, the will’s executor or the court-named individual will handle this aspect. The executor must apply for the CPP benefit within 50 days of the person’s death. If the executor doesn’t do the needful within this timeframe, others can apply for it in this order:
- The institution that has been paid for/individual is responsible for paying for the person’s funeral expenses
- A surviving spouse/common-law partner of the deceased
- The deceased’s immediate family member
Where Can You Apply For The CPP Benefit?
There are two ways to apply for the CPP benefit:
1. Online Application Process
- Login to your MSCA
- Complete the CPP Death Benefit form there
- Mail all the necessary certified true copies of the documentation
2. Paper Application Process
- Complete the Canada Pension Plan Death Benefit (ISP1200) Application
- Include all the required certified true copies of the documentation
- Next, mail the form or drop it off at a Service Canada office
- Mention the deceased contributor’s and your Social Insurance Number on all the documents before mailing them to Service Canada
After application, it will take between 6 and 12 weeks from the date on which Service Canada receives the completed application, for you to receive your payment.
