How Can I Find Out About Funeral Costs?

Oct 17, 2022

Budgeting for a funeral service could be challenging. As the number of options for funeral services, caskets, vaults, embalming, and burial plots expands, so does the average price. What's more, most funeral homes and cemeteries demand payment in full at the time of service. According to our experience at Morgan Funeral Home, this is the single most challenging aspect of funeral planning.

What Is Included In Funeral Costs?

Depending on where you live and the services you require, the final cost of a funeral can vary from only several hundred to tens of thousands of dollars.

The average cost of a funeral, based on our research and market surveys, is as follows:

  • There is a price range of $7.5k to $9.5k for cremation if you want a traditional funeral service complete with a viewing and casket presentation.
  • The average cost of a cremation is between $4,000 and $6,000, and it is followed by a memorial service at which the casket is not present.
  • Prices for funerals and memorial services that involve cremation typically range from $750 to $4,500.
  • A conventional funeral service, including viewing and burial, can cost anywhere from $12,500 to $17,500.
  • A funeral and burial can cost anywhere from $11,500 to $15,000 altogether (no casket, no visitation).

Average Funeral Cost Breakdown

In 2019, the average funeral cost was $9,135, according to the latest Funeral Price Survey conducted by the National Funeral Directors Association. However, only the standard funeral devices, like a casket and vault, are included. Costs associated with cemetery plots are not included. Considering the minimum charge of a burial plot in a private cemetery (estimated at $2,000), the national average of $11,000 seems more reasonable for a traditional funeral.

Several factors go into determining the final cost of a funeral, so it's essential to have a clear picture of what's covered. A high-end casket, for example, could cost anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 or more. The final cost of the funeral will be directly related to your choices.

The cost of funeral services can vary widely depending on factors such as the type of burial vault and casket chosen. Direct burial or cremation could be planned for less than $1,000, including the cemetery's price. We recommend that you consider planning a memorial service, however small, to honour the life and death of your loved one. Contact a reputable funeral home for detailed information regarding costs.
