My film instructor at Ryerson

Mr. Elvino Sauro was my Technology instructor at Ryerson film studies from 1989 to 1992. My sincere condolences at his passing to his family, friends, co-workers and former students.

Elvino was probably one of the toughest or most demanding and meticulous instructors I ever had. He did not crack many smiles in class, but underneath his tough as nails demeanor - you knew there was a fair-minded man in hiding. He did not suffer fools easily - or that was the impression he gave. He was all business in class. The film students (under Elvino's charge) would be put through the ringer (sometimes for weeks or a month at a time) to earn the priviledge to use specific camera/film equipment; while the multi-media students (under different tutouring - a different prof) got a crash course in several hours or sometimes 30 minutes or less; and usually instant access to any shared school production equipment. It was all too common for the camera and sound equipment to be returned damaged by the multi-media students, but more rarely by Elvino's film students. A testament to Mr. Sauro's teaching approach.

I remember in second year classes, when we had to pass tests to be certified to use the more advanced Ariflex camera equipment - that Elvino had a very stringent grading system. It was not the standard A+ to F grading system; but a grading system that went somewhere from A+ (to the 6th power, i.e A++++++ all the way down to students graded at M ------ and even P------ to the 6th power.) I think a couple of my classmate even ended up with a Q grade, which was beyond failed. I never saw or experienced this grading system before Elvino or since!

I also remember each year in February after every Academy Award ceremony - if a Ryerson Film grad won an Oscar - Elvino would proudly post the news on the school's bulletin board. Mr. Sauro was certainly tough, but the payoff for students that made it through his "rings of fire" tests were mutual respect for eachother and a professional, disciplined approach to film production standards. In the end - thank you Elvino for being a tough teacher.
