My Mentor

A lunch meeting was arranged for Donna and myself, by Jim Miller, the publisher of Macleans - a mutual friend of both, at Fenton's Restaurant in Toronto. We left there 3 hours later, with Donna confessing she normally never takes a lunch hour out; always eats at her desk. A mentorship began, and more importantly, a friendship for the rest of our lives. Donna, Hugh and I would meet for lunch, at least once a year, after they moved to Niagara on the Lake. When my daughter, Alex, now 31, was about 3 years old, they came to my house for dinner: Donna brought Alex a book, and multi strings of long pearls: Hugh asked for a sketch pad and did sketches, which I treasure, of Alex dripping in pearls!!! My mother was also very fond of Donna, and always thought she would be a perfect lieutenant-governor, OR Governor General: I told Donna so!! At Hugh's funeral, I made a fool of myself dissolving into tears, the minute I saw Donna - this strong dynamic lady who had been such an influence in my life - frail, and vulnerable, and devastated. From that day on, I made a point of keeping in touch whenever I could. I feel that Donna was never the same after Hugh's death. What a love story, and I have to say, I loved Hugh too. AND, I think the feeling was mutual. When the celebration of Donna's life takes place, I shall be there, and hopefully, have adequate kleenex. I loved you both, Anne (Logan McNamara)
