Dear Aunt Helen
It made me very sad to hear about your passing. In particular, I am disappointed in myself for having missed the opportunity of speaking to you personally.
You should know that you had a profound and positive impact on my life during those impressionable years. It was you who inspired me to play piano as I marvelled at your ability to perform with absolutely no lessons. What creative genius you had and how lucky I am to have had you as my mentor. The gift of music has lasted me a lifetime.
You created the best memories possible of Easter and Christmas. I can still see you boiling dozens of eggs to be brightly painted and then strategically hidden amongst the gardens with colourful straw and chocolates.
You worked tirelessly to help Oma with the house. I saw you washing the linoleum floors on your hands and knees, running the laundry through a hand wringer, pressing the laundry with a very heavy cast iron, heated on the stove, and removing the stove pipes in the spring to remove ash and soot.
You helped Oma in the garden cultivating the cucumbers, strawberries, goose berries, carrots and potatoes. Some of this was canned and stored in the cellar for us to enjoy all year long. Delicious meals were prepared on wood burning stoves that I still dream of today.
It was a tough life for you and I was the beneficiary. Throughout all the hard work you continued to look slim, attractive and regal. You were truly a blessing to me as your nephew and I’m proud to call you my Aunt.
Lots of love,
Frankie
