Obituary for Winston Shu-Wing Chow

Winston Shu-Wing Chow
Dr. Winston Shu-wing Chow

Born in Guangzhou, China on December 30, 1934, Winston was the second child of Chow Kwan and Chan Fung Ying. Winston had a thirst for knowledge, a generous spirit and lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed gardening, camping, and traveling and was an avid skier after learning how to ski at age 57 and continuing to ski into his 80s. He was determined and optimistic, an example to his children to whom he was devoted. Winston was a long time and faithful member of Milliken Gospel Church. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease since 2018 and died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 3, 2020. Winston will be mourned by his loving wife, May Chow, married for almost 56 years.

In 1964, Dr. Chow graduated from the National Taiwan University and married May (Sun) in Hong Kong. Over the next few years Winston trained in surgery and internal medicine in Halifax, Ottawa and Detroit, and after moving to Toronto he worked to become a hematologist and oncologist at both Toronto General and Sunnybrook Hospital. In 1969, Winston moved to Richmond Hill, opening up his private clinic. In the early 1990s, Winston founded a much needed cancer clinic in Newmarket, Ontario and moved his practice further north to Southlake Regional Health Centre, formerly York County Hospital. He touched many people’s lives with his care and dedication in the field of medicine.

In 1998, he officially retired, although he continued to read ECGs and do locums for many years after that as well as volunteered for many years with EMAS (Education, Medical Aid and Service) Canada, traveling to China and Jamaica to provide free medical aid for those in need.

Besides his wife, Winston is survived by his brother Gilbert, predeceased by elder sister Ellen Leung. Missed by his son Jason (Fiona) and his daughter Amy (Robert). Also survived by grandchildren Lucy, Andrew, Declan and Paige, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

At this time there are no plans for a memorial service. Information will be sent out when plans have been made.
