My Mom

As you can imagine, it’s difficult to stand up here and say goodbye to Mom. I can say with certainty that she was one of the few people in this world that I truly loved, and watching her struggle through this experience with cancer over the last couple of years has been a lesson to me in love, courage, friendship, suffering and ultimately loss. I’ll save the funny stories for the reception, for now I’d like to share with you all today the lessons a Mother has given to her Son.

Love, the kind that only a Mother can give. Whether it was the random hugs that she so frequently gave, advice to a lovestruck young man, or the complete unwavering devotion to her beloved. She taught me how to love.

Courage, during all the days that I have known her. She would take no grief, and she would tell you exactly what was on her mind. She faced many challenges throughout her life, from being an only child, to also losing her parents at a young age, and she always came through a stronger, determined woman. She taught me to be brave.

Friendship, such that I will possibly never know. She had gathered such a strong small circle friends, whom she loved so dearly. I have rarely seen someone so kind and giving as her. She taught me understanding.

Suffering, with dignity, respect, and selflessness. Even during her worst most trying times, and unimaginable pain, she would put others before herself. She taught me how to look misery in the face, square my shoulders, and hold my head up high.

And finally Loss. When something you love so dearly is taken away, leaving an emptiness, a hole that will never completely heal. In the end, she will teach me to deal with loss.

Thank you Mom, I love you, and I miss you more every day.
