Life Story for Jessie Louise "Joan" Paine (Simmons)
PAINE, JESSIE LOUIS (nee SIMMONS)
In her 100th year and surrounded by family; Jessie peacefully passed away on Sunday May 18th, 2014.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband, Albert (Lee) Paine (1981) and her son, Barry (2003).
The adored mother of Deborah and son-in-law, Peter; cherished grandmother of Matthew (Brynn) and Jonathon (Suzanna).
Jessie was an incredible woman; born in London, England at the beginning of World War I; she lived through many turbulent years and survived the London blitz in World War II. As a young seamstress she worked at The John Lewis store on Sloan Square where she took pride in being on the special watch spotting bombs and fires from the rooftop of the store.
Jessie said she would never date a soldier until she met and fell in love with a ‘dashing young Canadian soldier’. They soon married and Lee was posted to the Film Division at Canada House. Their son; Barry, was born during a bombing raid in 1943. It took great determination and courage to leave her homeland and family in 1945 and come to Canada as one of thousands of War Brides.
The family settled in the West Island area of Montreal and grew to include daughter, Deborah. Jessie was always busy with some creative endeavor; a lifelong seamstress and knitter she also learned to make ceramics and later began to paint in oils. Her paintings and rugs are all cherished mementoes by family members.
In 2003, after the death of her beloved son Barry, she moved to join her daughter in Niagara-on-the-lake. She was soon a part of the parish of St Mark’s and made many friends in town. Her quick smile and readiness to laugh delighted everyone. Jessie always impressed anyone she met and was cherished by the many personal care workers she encountered from CCAC. As her health declined she entered Chateau Gardens where she was lovingly cared for until her last breath.
A funeral will be held at St. Mark’s Church Niagara on the Lake at 2:00 on Wednesday June 4th, 2014 with visitation starting at 1:00pm. Following cremation, interment will be in Pointe Claire, Quebec.
In lieu of flowers donations to St. Mark’s Church Historic Properties Preservation Fund or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
