Jim and Joan

My Uncle Jim and our mother, his sister Joan reconnected and laughed together in their later years . Joan shared with us how happy she was about this. For decades they lived far apart, geographically and in lifestyle. He was in Ontario, she in Massachusetts. He ran a busy law practice and raised sheep dogs while Joan & Chick, our father, raised a family and ran a music business in Massachusetts. As their parents, Marjorie and Perciville Dodson aged, Jim and Joan supported them remaining in their own home. Jim was on the frontlines of coordinating their evolving needs and care. Joan and we children helped out for a few weeks each summer but Jim truly made it all work. And life went on. Only after retirement did Jim and Joan begin regular phone calls leisurely enough to become reacquainted. Well, apples and trees… they found they had so much in common, much of which emanated from their parents strong beliefs. At the top of their topics list was social justice and the role of governments and religion in bringing about good (or not) for the common person. They held up as principle that one should educate oneself on a topic prior to forming an opinion. On a more tangible level, they loved antique furniture, very old buildings and what they told us about the past. (That would be Marjorie, their mother, the history buff shining through.) Both their homes reflected this passion. Jim & Laura went on to commit themselves to a new school of historic preservation arts, Willowbank, while Joan supported her local historical society in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Uncle Jim came to visit Joan in her final months, in spite of his own frailties. We all got to appreciate and learn about one another again and were better for it. Though he has passed on Uncle Jim will remain in our hearts.
