Life Story for Desmond James "Des" Gilligan

Gilligan, Desmond James
Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the age of 84 in Niagara On The Lake, Ontario. Desmond is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marjorie Ann (nee Way), and his four children: Catherine Gray (Roy), Coreen, Mark (Debbie) and Paul (Joan). He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Nicholas Davidson, Justin and Jessica Gilligan, Matthew Lamb and Molly Gray, as well as his great grandson Jackson Gilligan.
Desmond was born in 1930 in Winnipeg to the late Francis and Frances Gilligan (nee O’Conner). He was predeceased by his brothers James and Gerard and will be greatly missed by his sisters Mary and Patricia and his brother Francis and his many nieces and nephews.
Desmond enjoyed a distinguished career in the RCMP followed by a career in corporate security and development of his own consulting practice. He and Marjorie raised their family in North Vancouver before moving to Ontario and ultimately retiring to Niagara On The Lake. Desmond will be remembered for his sense of humour, his gifts as a storyteller, his fierce determination and a love of lively debate. Desmond led a fascinating and rewarding life. He loved meeting people, travelling the world and a good round of golf.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 73 Picton Street, Niagara On The Lake, on Tuesday, August 19 at 11:00 am. Following interment a reception for family and friends will be held at the family home in Niagara On The Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson Society Canada or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. The family would like to thank Chateau Gardens LTC, particularly the 3rd floor staff for their kindness, compassion and outstanding care of Desmond in his last months.
