Condolence: My friendship with Kash was lively and creative. We first connected when my CBC producer job took my family to Toronto and he was fresh from the Air India stories. Our families became good friends; we had a lot of fun. For my next Toronto assignment, my family stayed behind in Montreal and the Kashmeris took me in as a weekday orphan, generous and sharing. Kash kept me fed with stories from the Globe battlefront, NOW Magazine, then the financial industry and his and Carlotta's B&B in Niagara-on-the Lake. I always admired Kash for his willingness to take on "received opinion" and powerful lobbies, even when there might be consequences. I'm better off for having had a friend like him.

Condolence: I first met Kash when he was indefatigably covering Mississauga as a stringer for the Globe and Mail. He was a man of convictions, and while he likely had friends in high places, I can vouch for the opposite being true. In 1997 I invited him to contribute to a Toronto Star section marking India's 50th year off the British leash. However word soon reached me that the Indian Consulate wanted his byline banished from the section. This led to much fuss over nothing because Kash delivered a fine story that hit the mark and unruffled Desai feathers. He was a professional.

Condolence: Dear Carlotta, we were very saddened to read today of your dear Kash’s sudden passing. We stayed at your lovely B&B two years in a row and remember fondly the interesting chats we had with both of you. Your hospitality was exemplary. You would make the most delicious breakfasts and Kash would do his part. He always was there with a smile and great conversation. I don’t know if you ever redid your kitchen but we talked a lot about that, and I sent you a design after measuring your kitchen. Kash talked of you with such adoration and the fact that you needed to be working in a beautiful kitchen that was worthy of your cooking! We wish you strength at this very difficult time. Condolence: I was initially drawn to Zuhair for two reasons: 1. He was from Bombay, where I had worked for two years. Once a Bombay-wallah, always a Bombay-wallah, with the shared delights of that crazy, cosmopolitan city. 2) He was the son of an illustrious son of India, Agha Jani Kashmiri, an Urdu writer of rare grace and wit, who became a famed Bollywood screen writer. Then I got to know Zuhair well. A dogged reporter with an independent streak, he wouldn't take orders easily from his editors at the Globe. I suggested he come to The Toronto Star but he politely declined. Then he got the scoop of an interview with Yasser Arafat, the first Canadian journalist to land it. That was a especially memorable undertaking, given that Arafat was still a taboo topic in Canada. Zuhair and I kept in touch. I was most touched that this "tough" reporter was sensitive enough to look after his father who had moved to Canada and was in bad health. That was a very Indian cultural thing, if you will. After his move to Niagara-on-the-Lake, he and I would connect once in a while and he would, invariably, be gracious enough to invite me to his B and B, and to meet his dear wife. That it never happened is my misfortune and loss. We all have to go some day, and shall catch up with dear Zuhair in his new abode.

Condolence: So sad to hear of the passing of Kash. We were colleagues at The Globe and Mail and I admired his talent and his ability to re-invent himself and always maintain his integrity. Kash had unique insight, passion and love for life. Blessings and prayers to his family.

Condolence: I’m sending my condolences for Kash. I work at the NOTL post office. I would see him weekly and we would joke. He left his keys one day and since then he would say I have my keys you don’t have to worry. I personally will miss his smiling face. God Bless.

Condolence: It's interesting how similar everyone's memories of Kash are. I too remember him at The Globe as a source of bright eagerness. You wanted to talk to him and hear what he was thinking about. The world will miss that.

Condolence: We were honored to know Zuhair, if only recently. We are deeply saddened by his passing, especially the deep loss felt by wife Carlotta and brother Sarwar. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. The world is dimmer without Zuhair.

Condolence: I knew Kash as a colleague at the Globe and Mail. He was bright, energetic and full of fun. His sympathy for the underdog didn't always make him popular with management there. Later, we connected by email and I had hoped to meet in person at Niagara on the Lake. Sorry that hope is now gone. But I feel I'm getting to know Kash better after reading these heartfelt tributes. Condolences to Carlotta and the family on losing him too soon.

Condolence: All of us are devastated and hurt by this news. Kash was a miracle of a man, joyful, pleased and grateful. Despite the loss of the physical presence, we will never forget the kindness in his heart. We are so sorely saddened with our broken and empty hearts. We offer our thoughts and prayers during this painful time. He will be missed very much.

Condolence: I knew Kash at The Globe and Mail where he was an esteemed colleague, a great reporter and all round wonderful and warm guy. He radiated kindness and curiosity. His sudden loss is so very tragic. I am very sorry. He contributed much to journalism in Canada.

While words fail to capture the pain you are experiencing, continue to look forward to the time when Zuhair will be raised from the dead and reunited with you, his family.
