Obituary for Sophie Stankiewicz

Sophie Stankiewicz
STANKIEWICZ, Sophie Irene (Moniuszko) – Born on April 9, 1922 in Sokolka Poland it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sophie on February 19, 2020 at Niagara on the Lake. Loving mother of Yolanda Henry (Mike). Cherished grandmother of Christopher Henry (Rosie), Arden Deir (Thomas) and Kendryth Richardson (Andrew). Great grandmother to Vaughan, August and Hazel. Dear sister of Janusz Moniuszko and Janina Ansilewska, still residing in Poland. Predeceased by her husband Zygmunt and sister Halina Moniuszko. Fondly remembered by many nieces, cousins and friends. Throughout her nearly 98 years Sophie lived a very adventurous and full life. When the Russians invaded Poland in WWII she was deported to Siberia at the age of 19 along with her mother, sisters and brother. There she taught German, Physics and Chemistry. She was sent to a teaching college in Moscow. While training in Moscow she was hired to work at the Polish Embassy in the last year of the war. When the war ended, she returned to Poland. She escaped to West Germany in 1947 to marry her childhood friend Zygmunt Stankiewicz. They lived in London, England for four years before immigrating to Canada in 1951. She and Zygmunt settled in Windsor, Ontario where she worked as a medical secretary for two doctors until her retirement at the age of 70. Sophie moved to Niagara on the Lake in 2007, shortly after her daughter retired there, and enjoyed her final years at Pleasant Manor in Virgil. Her faith has been very important to her and has helped her through the war years, the move to Canada and the ups and downs of her long life. The family would like to thank the Supportive Housing Staff at Pleasant Manor who went out of their way to help Sophie during her illness, and the excellent care by palliative nurses Helen and Cathy along with Dr. Ricciardi. Funeral Mass and internment will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Niagara on the Lake and has been postponed until further notice.
