Obituary for Miriam McEwen

McEWEN, Miriam - With sadness we say goodbye to Miriam Ruth McEwen of Niagara-on-the-Lake. She leaves behind her beloved son, Adam Jowett (Jacke Chiang) and her adored grandson, Sammy Jowett, her sister Bonnie Dawe and her devoted nieces and nephews Janice, Catherine, Virginia, Robert and Jessica all scattered across the country.

Just as she lived her life, “Mimi” left the world on her own terms. When Covid struck she abandoned plans to move into a seniors’ home and stayed put at the “Peake Inn” a Chautauqua family cottage that she made her home. She found joy in the nesting birds, the roses and clematis, and was delighted by the baby groundhog that showed up this spring. She had many visits with Adam and Sammy and socially distanced get-togethers with other family, friends and neighbours. Her family is forever grateful for the kindness of those who checked in on her and lent a helping hand over the past year.

Mimi was born and raised in Toronto, the daughter of Shaw and Edythe McEwen, where she attended Brown School and later Oakwood Collegiate. She began teaching at the primary level as a young woman, a job that would provide for her and her son over the years when her marriages didn’t work out. She is fondly remembered for her years at Kew Beach Jr Public School where she was known to play guitar and sing for her JK students. When retirement called, she set out in her Roadtrek with her dogs on board enjoying her independence while seeing North America.

Those of us who were fortunate to have Mimi in our lives will always remember her lively spirit and wildly infectious laugh. Arrangements entrusted to MORGAN FUNERAL HOME, 415 Regent St. Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. If you wish to remember her through a gift, she would be pleased to see donations to the World Wildlife Fund Canada.
