Obituary for Malvina "Babs" Pritty

Pritty, Malvina “Babs”, born in Liverpool England, formerly of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Virgil, passed suddenly in her 92nd year on earth on Wednesday September 27th, 2023 at the Welland General Hospital.
Our deep sadness over her unexpected departure is soothed as we remember Bab’s unfailing kindness, generosity, sense of humour, and her passion for the arts.
Babs is predeceased by parents Eric and Molly McBurnie, brothers Eric and Peter McBurnie, husband John W.S Pritty and sons Christopher and William Pritty.
Dear mother to Thomas Pritty (Janice), Wendy Astle (Bruce), and grandchildren Alexander “A.J” Astle (Samantha) and Katelyn Secord (Blake).
Cherished little sister of Joyce Hayward and Auntie Babs to Sally, Scott, Anthony, Silva-Kate, Melisandre, Lisa and John.
Babs came to Canada with her family shortly after the end of WWII in 1948.
Following the family tradition of creativity, she tailored costumes and designed and constructed stage sets for Garden City Productions in the 1970’s and 80’s.
She was also head of display at Eaton’s in The Pen Center St. Catharines for 16 years.
Babs then re-discovered her love of art as a painter, basically self-taught, like her brother Peter and son Bill.
As a child she developed her technique with water colours coached by “Poppa” Coombes, who Babs lived with in Devon England as an evacuee during the war.
She advanced to oils and later acrylics, with her pieces displayed at Niagara area art shows including the Pump House in Niagara-on-the Lake.
Just a few weeks before her passing, Babs was asked to display her art at her new residence at Lookout Ridge Retirement Community in Fonthill.
She sold several paintings and that meant everything to Babs. She was delighted others loved her art enough to display her work in their homes.
Her compassion and talent will be remembered for generations to come.
Babs’ family would like to offer very special thanks to the very kind and caring staff at Lookout Ridge. She was only there for a few months, but she loved it there and that meant everything to all of us.
Cremation has taken place. A private interment will take place at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Morgan Funeral Home, 415 regent Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake. Memories, photos and condolences may be shared at www.morganfuneral.com
