Obituary for Dietrich Hermann Roehm

ROEHM, Dietrich Hermann - It is with sadness that the family of Dietrich Roehm announce his passing on December 18th at St. Catharines General Hospital. Dietrich was born on January 24th, 1935 in Essen, Germany to Wilhelm and Anna Luise Roehm.
In 1954, Dietrich was one of 400 students selected by the US State Department to participate in a exchange program, where he completed his high school education. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 and was always proud to say that he was “a Canadian by choice”.
His almost 30-year career at IBM was varied and exciting. He had the opportunity to work on the first electronic collection of data for the Canadian census, the testing and implementation of the scanning process used in retail stores, was a Branch Manager in Winnipeg, Manitoba and headed up an International Trade Group based in the US.
Dieter loved to sing the “old” songs and often recounted accompanying a lounge singer in Winnipeg on tunes like “Lily Marlaine”. His moves on the dance floor were legendary, as he had worked as an instructor for the Arthur Murray dance studio one time to make ends meet. Dieter's other passions were sailing and travel and he had the opportunity to visit many beautiful places and to make friends wherever he went. His love of flying was a lifelong passion and he was proud of his military service, having briefly served in the USAF with his brother Harald.
Dieter was never happier than when he had on an apron and was cooking for his family and friends – he loved to BBQ, cook traditional German dishes and in later years loved to research recipes on the Internet and watch cooking videos. He was very proud that all three of his grandsons are following in his footsteps and enjoy cooking.
Dietrich was predeceased by his brother Harald of Florida. He is survived by his loving wife Lynn; son Harald, beloved daughter Ingrid Vera Roehm and grandson Braiden of Welland; his devoted step-daughter Michelle (Jody) Lemoine of Virgil and grandsons Rhys (Casey) of Denmark and Sean of Ottawa; and his brother Ulrich and three nieces in Germany. Dietrich will also be missed by brother and sister-in-law Bob and Diane Mulder of Vernon, BC and by his many friends.
