An amazing fellow

I was Art's brother-in-law for a short period of time and during his marriage to my sister. The marriage didn't last long, but as I was living with them at the time, Art very kindly and without any malice welcomed me to stay when it ended. It was a most generous offer, from a man grieving with a heavy heart ............... and I took him up on it. Our mutual company was good for us both, I believe. Whoever got home first was charged with making dinner. Art's meals were usually better than mine (his work was as a cook at the time!!), but as with most couples, he always commented that it was just nice when someone else did the cooking. Housework/yard duties were fairly shared; things seemed to be going great, but..... After quite a few months putting up with my rather wild, single-guy lifestyle, Art suggested that he felt that I would "probably be happier living somewhere else". I thanked him for the sentiment, but said he was wrong; I LOVED the place!! Art eventually clarified that it was he who would be happier and a light went on.. (21 year old guys aren't that smart or sensitive to others). We remained friends. Although seeing each other only twice since I left Listowel, memories of my relationship with Art Fallis are among my most cherished. He was a gentle gentleman, even when such men were more common then, than those in the 21st century, when they are now such a rarity. He was a wonderful role model to a young man who had left home, somewhat rudderless, long before. I didn't recognize this until much later. Art's beautiful Barbershop tenor voice will noticeably add to that choir singing out beyond the Pearly Gates. Via con Dios, Art. Brydon McFarlen
