Richard (Rick) Hiscott
First, I offer my sincerely condolences to Silva, Karl's children and grandchildren. I might have been the first person to befriend Karl as we both started first year undergraduate programs at Brock University in 1970. Skiing is not mentioned in the obituary, but he was a fine (one-time competitive) skier and I once went with him to Fonthill, to that small hill (I ended up with a cut on my face from a crash). Later, I helped Karl "defuse" a batch of overpressured "champagne" at his house, and ended up quite tipsy. A group of about 7 of us supported one another through 1st to 3rd year chemistry and math courses (Barb, JR, Henry, John, Karl, myself). At that time, not yet famous from wine making, Karl was (and I am sure remained) a kind, generous, dependable and humorous friend. It is sad to hear of his death, but I know that he led a full life, and influenced may people along the way. Even though I have not spoken with Karl since probably 1974, my memories of him remain fresh as if lived yesterday. It was an honour to have had his friendship.
