Life Story for Joy Ferris

Joy Ferris
Joy Ferris

It is with great sadness that the family of Joy Ferris announces her death at home on September 2, 2017 after a long and debilitating illness. Born in Witbank South Africa, Joy and her late husband George (1996) built up a very successful heavy, structural-steel engineering business. Joy continued to run part of an affiliated business from Canada until her health began to deteriorate in 2012.

Following the death of George, Joy moved to Canada to be close to her only child and great friend Ashley Hayes and husband Tony. In 2005 Joy moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake where her energetic, friendly and outgoing spirit enabled her to make new friends particularly as a volunteer in the crafts corner at Upper Canada Lodge.

Working and thriving in very much a man’s world of heavy engineering in South Africa, Joy remained very much a lady: from her days as a debutant being presented to the emissary of the Queen in South Africa through her talents in the kitchen such as cake making and decoration, flower arranging and love of entertaining. She was always a glamorous and fashionable dresser right to the end as well as a frequent visitor to the beauty salon even if in her latter days the salon had to visit her at home, thanks Gail, Erica and Irmi. Her motto was “Rather be out the world than out the fashion”. Now she is out of this world, may the “Joyous One” be forever remembered for her love of life, her lively sense of humour and fun as well as her classy style.

Joy died peacefully at home where Fr. William Roberts of St Mark’s Church administered the Last Rites. We are grateful for the empathy and kindness of Dr. Wouter Oelofse, Dr. Nathan Herrmann, Dr. Rebecca Zabek, Dr. Kevin Clark as well as the wonderful ladies who cared for Joy both day and night over the past few years Nicole, Sharon, Kerry-Anne, Sharon B and Janice.

We thank our friends who came to visit right until the end- your visits cheered her up and meant the world to her. The Very Revered Douglas Stoute formerly Dean of St James Cathedral in Toronto, never forgot Joy and made several trips to visit her.

The funeral mass will be held at St Mark’s Anglican Church, 41 Byron St, Niagara-on-the-Lake, on Saturday September 9, 2017 at 2 pm with the interment in St Mark’s Cemetery followed by a reception at St. Mark's Addison Hall.

No flowers please. For those who wish, memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made in the name of Joy Ferris to: Hospice Niagara, The Stabler Center, 403, Ontario Street, St. Catharines. Memories, photos and condolences can be shared at www.morganfuneral.com
